An exhibition identity for photographer Rineke Dijkstra at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden, exploring the vulnerability of being seen and the quiet power of simply existing. Initially drawn to Dijkstra's portraits for their visual simplicity, I became fascinated by the time, attention, and human connection behind them.
Through extended conversations and recurring encounters with her subjects, Dijkstra captures moments of unguarded presence, revealing the complexity of the individual through seemingly minimal compositions. The identity translates this sensibility into a restrained typographic system, using centered alignment, consistent weight, and a warm yellow palette to create a sense of calm and focus. Alternating Swedish and English typography across the exhibition title wall and posters introduces a rhythm of repetition and sequence, echoing the act of photographing a subject over time.
The visual identity remains entirely typographic, allowing the photography to retain its own voice. An interactive title wall incorporates a concealed webcam that captures visitors in quiet intervals, extending the exhibition's central idea beyond the photographs themselves. A companion microsite archives these portraits, allowing visitors to revisit their own moments of vulnerability and presence after leaving the museum. Together, the exhibition graphics, interactive installation, and microsite invite viewers to look beyond the act of taking a photograph and consider what it means to truly see another person.
